About Brooks Szewczyk

Brooks Szewczyk

Hi, I’m Brooks. I’m a pastor at Cornerstone Community Church in Burnsville, Minnesota, and this is the place where I try to answer the questions people are asking about God, the Bible, and the Christian life.

Who am I?

I earned a Master of Divinity from Midwestern Baptist Theological Seminary, a Bachelor of Arts in Biblical Studies from Spurgeon College, and a Certificate in Bible & Missions from Bethany Global University. I’m the former Editor-in-Chief at Just Disciple, and I’ve been published in Cornfield Theology and a few other publications.

But much more importantly, I’m married to an incredible woman, Hannah. And together, we have three children: Silas, Jane, and Peter.

What am I passionate about?

I am passionate about connecting people with the truth of Jesus Christ found in the Bible. That’s really the whole reason this site exists. I believe God has given us in his word all things that pertain to life and godliness (2 Peter 1:3), which means the answers to our deepest questions aren’t hidden somewhere we can’t reach. They’re written down. Most of the time, people just need someone to open the Bible with them.

Why do I write here?

Across many projects over the years, I’ve found that people type a lot of theological questions into their devices. Someone sits in a hospital waiting room and searches for a prayer before surgery. Someone else finishes a documentary and wants to know what the Bible says about aliens. Someone else is in the middle of a hard season and is quietly wondering whether God is testing them.

Those are real questions from real people. And I’ve found that answering them is a huge blessing to people. It has been a blessing to me, too, in at least three ways.

First, it has given me opportunities to pray for people. People I never would have met otherwise have reached out, and I’ve had the privilege of praying for them.

Second, it keeps me grounded. It’s easy for a pastor to spend his time answering questions nobody is asking. The questions people type into a search bar at midnight are honest ones. They keep me close to what people are actually thinking about, worrying about, and wrestling with.

Third, it serves my local church.

So, how does a blog serve a local church?

My ministry is all about the local church. I am never choosing to do anything online to the detriment of the church. In fact, everything I create, I create for the church. Many of the posts here began as messages I preached at Cornerstone, and I write them with my own congregation in mind.

That might sound strange coming from a guy with a blog. But I really believe it. The local church is the pillar and buttress of the truth (1 Timothy 3:15). A website is not. That’s why I’ve argued that online church isn’t good enough. Everything here is meant to point you toward a faithful church, not to replace one.

So, if you’re reading this and you aren’t part of a local church, that’s the first thing I’d want for you. Find a faithful one and get planted.

Have a question?

If you have a question you’d like me to try to answer, or something I can pray for you about, I’d love to hear from you. Send me a note here.

I can’t promise I’ll have every answer. But I know where to look.
